Centering Voices of Women of Color in the Gender Based Violence Movement
Transforming the Gender-Based Violence Movement: Increasing BIPOC Representation
and Actualizing Accountability
The Problem
The gender based violence and childhood sexual abuse fields are guided by white women’s cultural norms which contributes to an overrepresentation of white women.
This is a structural issue that is inherently set up to fail women of color and hinder their thriving.
The Solution
To address white supremacy and racism, we must recognize the historical contributions of women of color, create supportive equitable work environments that emphasize anti-racist practices, and maintain accountability structures.
Intersectionality is critical to the advancement of this response.
